The Goals

Develop an indigenous church planting movement through team church planting

  • Desire to see the church planting movement move out from beyond Nairobi and surrounding areas to the rural and coastal regions & city centers

    • Develop sustainable seminary & ministerial training programs

  • Leave a viable ministerial training program and institution for the Baptist churches of Kenya, based out of Lukenya
  • Investigate the possibility of beginning another sound, strong Bible college in the coastal regions

    The Strategy

    1. How will we make contacts?

  • We must have direct connection with the lost, the people in our churches, and those we are actively discipling.
  • Be meaningful and intentional in our planning of integrating the contacts and gospel into our daily plans. Look for opportunities and depend on God to show them to us.
  • Be able to briefly and clearly tell the story of Jesus, how he saved me, and is impacting my life.

    • - Teach our church and disciples to do the same
    - Maintain accountability by practicing with one another
    - Make a list of 5 who we will share the message with weekly
    - Weekly meet and report how it went, pray, and exchange ideas


    2. How will we assemble converts and start a church?

  • Assemble local believers, current discipleship projects, and those interested in the gospel into small groups
  • Begin meeting in homes (aim is indigenous & reproducible)

    • - Team member serves as initial pastor, with goal of training a Kenyan believer to become the pastor
    - Focus on discipleship and teaching in the church (see below "vibrant, healthy, & growing")
    - Train every believer in the basic evangelistic presentation
    - Teaching, discipleship, & Bible studies will occupy a large amount of the time.

  • As the group expands then look for either larger homes or meet in "public, open places"
  • Build significant relationships with believers in order to disciple and cast a vision of church planting and church growth.

    • - Be a servant to the believers, making at least one appointment each week with a local believer for the purpose of praying with them and asking them how we can serve them.
    - Model a consistent testimony of hard work and frequent evangelism. Take local believers along as I serve, to mentor in this way and to cast a vision of evangelism and discipleship to the local church members in order to advance a church planting movement.

  • Invest heavily in those believers who are obedient to the Word and yearning to grow.

    • - Facilitate continued training and mentoring, investing in their lives for the sake of the kingdom
    - Arrange or rearrange the schedule to be available when people are available in the city and to give opportunities for training others

    - Providing comprehensive biblical instruction & training
    - Ensuring believers in the church are also engaging in the Great Commission (see below)


    3. How will the church become vibrant, healthy, and growing?

  • Focus on prayer
  • Model Christlikeness
  • Always look to mentor

    • - "Never do anything by yourself; always take a brother along so you can model and mentor as you go."
    - Foster an attitude of mentorship, wherein others are reaching out to mentor others
    - Identify leaders & future teachers with the goal of beginning a Bible institute or pastoral Bible study for these individuals.

  • Fellowship and spend time working with others in the church
  • Passionately and aggressively evangelize

    • - Nurture the desires to share Christ
    - Segment the city into geographic and socio-economic zones for planned approach to reaching the lost, ensuring that all population groups are a focus for receiving the Gospel

  • Teach the basic doctrines
  • Teach inductive methodology so people can mine for themselves

    • 4. We will begin a seminary to train the leaders of the church-planting movement. How will the program be constructed and funded?

  • Especially focus on block classes in order to train and then see the men take the information back and begin utilizing in their environments.
  • Focus on seeing the men learn and study, then prepare lessons and watch/critique them as they teach to others
  • It is imperative that financial paternalism does not find root; therefore, students will be required to pay or work to support their education and room/board (as appropriate). Alternatively, they may seek to receive assistance from their church, but it must not be funded by western money.



    • The Metrics

    After two years in Kenya, we will evaluate our ministry and begin preparations for expansion

    The evaluation will take place on three levels:

  • Self-evaluation. We will make a timeline of our activities and compare them with our entry plan. We will prepare a strength-weakness-opportunity-threat analysis and compare it with the analysis in our ministry prospectus.
  • Local pastor evaluation. We will seek input from the perspective of the local pastors and church members through conducting interviews and possibly distributing a questionnaire.
  • Seek input from other missionaries who are successfully implementing a church planting movement. This may be accomplished by holding a training event and inviting others to teach and evaluate our ministry.

    • Having conducted an evaluation of our ministry, we will modify our plan as necessary and set short-term and long-term goals for the upcoming years. This re-evaluation phase will also be a good opportunity to consider expansion.
